Thailand

ATD Fourth World has been active in Thailand since 1979. Our activities are centred on Bangkok. We are also involved in a research and outreach project in north-eastern Thailand which meets poor communities, and to creates or strengthens links with others who are trying to make contact with the region’s poorest people.

Our main areas of activity are the following:
Activity with two disadvantaged communities in Bangkok:
  • Knowledge-sharing and discovery activities with children and young people, such as the “knowledge in the street” project, discovery and education workshops, cultural excursions, or the Tapori Network.
  • The Festival of Knowledge.
  • Special events: Thai festivals, celebrations and community excursions.

Public relations and spreading our message:
Meetings with Thai authorities; meetings between community representatives and Thai or foreign organisations and public figures, so as to communicate the lived realities of poor communities – their difficulties, but also their sense of community and solidarity. These meetings are opportunities to strengthen ties of friendship and support.

  • Network: the programme of Thailand’s National Human Rights Commission.
  • Partnership: solidarity campaign in collaboration with the University of Thammasat in Bangkok.

Mobilization of friends and recruitment of Thai volunteers:
Development of partnerships with other organizations and universities; training for interns from various Thai and foreign universities.

  • Workplace and public events focussing on human rights and the fight against poverty, especially on 17th October.
  • Training for ATD Fourth World members in Thailand through meetings, study trips, and internships with teams of permanent volunteers.
  • Fundraising activities: a jumble sale organised by the friends of the ATD Fourth World Foundation.
  • Opportunities for sharing and socialising with the friends of ATD Fourth World: regular suppers on Wednesday nights.

Wherever men and women are condemned to live in extreme poverty, human rights are violated.
To come together to ensure that these rights be respected is our solemn duty.
