On the Web
This web site is dedicated to October 17th, the World Day to Overcome Extreme Poverty, officially recognised by the United Nations in 1992. The day was first celebrated in 1987 by thousands of participants at the Human Rights Plaza in Paris, France. The October 17th message is: " Wherever men and women are condemned to live in extreme poverty, human rights are violated. To come together to ensure that these rights be respected is our solemn duty. " (F. Joseph Wresinski). Since its creation, October 17th has been a day for those living in extreme poverty to speak out and for all citizens to consider how they can contribute to the eradication of extreme poverty. The theme of the United Nations for the International day for poverty eradication 2005 is "Achieving the Millennium Development Goals - empowering the poorest of the poor" http://www.oct17.org
In Tapori, children whose families have hard lives join together with children who want to be their friends. Together, they say, “We want all children to have the same chances.” They do many things to make the Tapori motto come true. YOU CAN TOO! http://www.tapori.org
Are you an artist, a painter, a storyteller, a sportsman? Come and share your talents!
Every year since 1985, our Summer Street Workshops invite people from all walks of life - artists, craftsmen, professionals, sportsmen, librarians, anyone who likes - to come and share their skills with children, young people and their parents in underprivileged neighbourhoods around Europe (mainly in France).
The workshops take place in the street and last from one to three weeks. They are a very straightforward way to meet families living in extreme poverty. With them, let us discover paths towards a world where everyone can participate and no one is excluded!
The Summer Street Workshops don’t end there… Those who take part are then able to share with others this experience of working alongside very poor families and, in so doing, help in the fight against exclusion.
WHERE
Summer Street Workshops are held in France, 50 places, various dates, in Belgium, Spain, Switzerland and in other countries yet to be confirmed.
WHEN
Throughout the summer, at different times depending on the region and the country. On the enclosed form, let us know of several dates when you are available. You’ll need to be available for 2 to 3 weeks at any one time.
http://www.atdsap.orgJoseph Wresinski was born to immigrant parents in a poor neighbourhood of Angers, France. He grew up in a family which suffered from great poverty and social exclusion. In 1946, he was ordained as a priest and served in industrial and rural parishes where, right from the beginning, he related to the most deprived families. http://www.joseph-wresinski.org/Father-Joseph-Wresinski.html
